More baggage than planned? We will be happy to take your additional, overweight or oversized items of baggage for a fee per route.
Excess baggage
If items of baggage exceed certain limits, they can be booked as excess baggage, in which case you will incur additional costs. Please refer to the tables below for the exact prices.
We recommend making an early reservation either at your travel agency or via the Discover Airlines Service Center.
In Economy or Premium Economy Class, baggage is considered to be excess baggage if it weighs over 23 kg (up to max. 32 kg) and/or is bigger than 158 cm (width X + height Y + depth Z with a total of max. of up to 292 cm).
Excess baggage in business is deemed to be a piece of baggage bigger than 158 cm up to a total max. of 292 cm.
The excess baggage fee is charged for each route. Connecting flights within 24 hours are considered one route. The amounts in the table are reference values. Currency conversions may result in price variations.

Please provide each item of baggage (inside and outside) with your name and your (mobile) telephone number before you drop it off at the airport. Bag tags or stickers for checked baggage are available free of charge at the check-in desk. You can also use your own bag tags.
In general, we collect data to perform the contract of carriage you have concluded with us. This includes both passenger and baggage data. We share this data with the airlines and airports concerned to ensure that your baggage can be carried on and forwarded by other airlines and at other airports. We also assist the German customs authorities in meeting their legal obligations by granting limited access to selected data.
Excess baggage weighing over 32 kg cannot be accepted as travel baggage. However, you can send the baggage item as air freight. Please note that the maximum permissible weight per item of baggage may vary for flights with other airlines. Contact the respective airline for details.
The respective local Lufthansa Cargo sales office can inform you about air freight.

Discover Airlines is offering a baggage pick-up service in partnership with Airportr. For departures from Frankfurt, Airportr will collect your baggage from any address of your choice in the Frankfurt, Mannheim and Heidelberg area, and check it in for your flight.
Simply add an item of checked baggage to your booking. Alternatively, you can book an additional item of checked baggage via the Discover Airlines Service Center, at the check-in counter or, in the case of a package holiday, via your tour operator. The fee for this additional baggage varies depending on the size, weight and destination.

Discounted fees
On some long-haul flights, you benefit from discounted fees on a second item of baggage (23 kg, dimensions of 158 cm) in Economy Class. You can take advantage of this offer at check-in or directly online for an especially low price when you book your flight. You can also add baggage later via your profile.
The discounted fees only apply to the second item of baggage. Miles & More members with Frequent Traveller status and above and Star Alliance Gold members enjoy an increased free baggage allowance on all flights. In this case, the discounted flat fee no longer applies, and the normal excess baggage rules apply to every additional baggage item.
